Artificial Grass for Dog Owners – Polyurethane Backing and EnvirofillPosted on: 10th April, 2018
It’s a common concern…
“I want an artificial grass lawn but I’m worried my dogs will ruin it…”
“Will dog pee ruin my artificial lawn…?”
“My garden is a muddy mess but at least the dog can wee on it…”
As synthetic grass increases in popularity the question of it’s suitability for dogs comes up more and more.
There are plenty of examples of artificial gardens where dog urine creates a smelly, unhygienic problem. Synthetic lawns make a ‘low maintenance garden’ not ‘zero maintenance garden’ and dealing with dog urine is an important step to keep it looking good, keeping it hygienic and fresh. Most artificial grass suppliers offer products backed with latex, a strong, stable material but one which will absorb pet urine so washing through with water and applying some appropriate cleaner is necessary to prevent hygiene and odour issues.
A latex backed artificial grass is more than suitable for most dog owners who keep an eye on their dogs toilet habits and clean up after but there are new options available to consider…
What are the new options? Innovation and technology has now combined to significantly lessen the problem, offering a brilliant solution for dog owners who want an artificial lawn designed, manufacturered and finished specifically for them.
Polyurethane backed artificial grass and Envirofill premium artificial grass infill have now transformed the options…
Polyurethane (PU) Backed Artificial Grass – PU will not absorb moisture, liquids or urine as latex does and so greatly reduces hygiene/odour issues associated with dogs and artificial grass (we still recommend washing through pet urine as often as possible). At Perfectly Green we have introduced 2 new grasses to our range this year with PU backing:
Maxus Artificial Grass with polyurethane backing
35mm, C Shaped Yarn
20 stitches per 10cm
Density of approximately 21,000 fibres per m2
60 ltr/min permeability
10 UV stability warranty
|Lagonda Artificial Grass with polyurethane backing
43mm, 3 pile heights, Ribbed Diamond Shape
19 stiches per 10cm
Density of approximately 19,000 fibres per m2
60 ltr/min permeability
10 year UV stability warranty
Latex backed grasses are still entirely suitable for use where dogs are present although quick attention/action is recommended to wash through dog urine soon after making contact with the grass. For more information all our full range of grasses Click Here
Envirofill is our other product to benefit dog owners – a premium infill material which de-odourises 99% of dog urine smells and inhibits the growth of bacteria, mildew and mold. Envirofill is specifically designed to keep your artificial lawn fresh, clean and hygienic with a guarantee of 16 years!
Microban® technology reduces ammonia odor from urine by 99%. Microban has been scientifically proven to disrupt the bacteria process that converts pet urine into ammonia odour.
Envirofill® has long been the product of choice for thousands of landscape installations and hundreds of sports fields that require a clean and long-lasting synthetic lawn infill for children, pets and athletes. During the Envirofill manufacturing process, Microban® antimicrobial technology is infused into the proprietary coating of the rounded sand to help prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew that can cause stains, odors, and product deterioration. The result is an infill that can withstand the harshest of environments, providing customers with a durable and reusable solution.
Envirofill with Microban technology
Supplied in 22kg bags

Envirofill can be used on new projects and existing artificial grass installations.
There are lots of considerations and preferences to take into account when choosing the right artificial grass. For dog owners the decision process can be more complicated but there are now options available specifically to address their needs.
