So, how much artificial grass do I need?

You must work out how much artificial grass you will need to cover your garden, playground or sports area? You can call a member of our team at any time but we have also put together a few tips and some handy advice to help you calculate how much artificial grass you need.

How to measure your garden

Unless you have an appropriate 'area measuring' app in your phone, you will need:

  • A tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Grid paper or plain paper
  • Calculator

Consider the location

Ensure that you have suitable space and access to carry base preparation materials and artificial grass rolls into position. Trying to take materials and products through the house is never ideal!

Important note

When planning your artificial grass garden always bear in mind that hot sunlight, reflected and amplified by windows, mirrors and other reflective surfaces, may cause artificial grass to melt or be scorched. Avoid installing artificial grass too close to surfaces which may cause damage.

Plan the space

Lincoln artificial grass

Our artificial grass is sold in square meters, all products available in 2m and 4m widths, while some are also available in 5m wide rolls as well. When the grass is unrolled the grass fibres lean in 1 direction (along the length of the roll). Maximum roll length is 25m but we are able to cut the roll to any length you require. Because the grass fibres have a natural direction, plan the position of the roll widths so that, where possible, they face the house from the back garden and face the road from the front garden. This is important because the grass will look best and most natural when looking into the pile. If you are unsure about this please contact us for advice.

This step may be simple for more basic garden or installation layouts, but for more complex installations, this step may be best planned out using grid paper.

Measure the garden

This process should be relatively simple; just measure the width and length of the area for your artificial grass. We recommend over-measuring the length of the roll required by at least 300mm so  there is margin for site/cutting variances. Remember that the grass roll width is always either 2m, 4m or 5m so if your garden width requirement is for 7m, for example, you will need 2 no. 4m widths where one of the rolls is trimmed down by 1m.

Calculate artificial grass requirement

Here is the best way to work out how much artificial grass you require based on the size of your garden.

Measure the width and length of your area and multiply the two numbers. This will give you your required square metres.
Determine if you need a 2m wide roll, a 4m wide roll, a 5m wide roll or a combination of rolls. If you require a combination of widths please check with us to ensure that the same batches are available.
Then decide on the length of the roll(s) based on your measurements, adding 300mm for site/cutting variances
Be sure, when using more than one roll, that all rolls are installed in the same direction otherwise the opposing pile direction will look unsightly.

Calculating the artificial grass price

The prices of our artificial grass varies depends on the type your require – Visit individual artificial grass product pages to find specific details and pricing. You can input your roll width(s) and length(s) and the price will automatically calculate for you.
