Award winning Lappa Valley uses Perfectly Green artificial grass for mini golf project
Published: 27 March 2023
Set in the beautiful Cornwall countryside, Lappa Valley Steam Railway tourist attraction offers a superb range of facilities including a variety of miniature train rides, a fantastic new indoor play centre, a boating lake, woodland walks and party facilities.
The most recent development is the 12 hole miniature golf course, set right by the side of the boating lake and the The Engine Shed. The brief was to transform an old and tired 9 hole crazy golf course. Keith Southwell, owner and MD of Lappa Valley, and Che Bristow, owner and MD of AGI, defined the budget and requirements, one of which was to make the new mini golf course wheelchair and elderly friendly, accessible for all. Che produced a 12 hole design and, once Keith was happy to progress, conducted a full site survey at which point they discussed the proposal in fine detail.
Keith asked for some changes which included making the surrounding area all weather. To acheive this, and without blowing the budget to pieces, Keith provided all plant and aggregate for the project – this countered the increase in cost of the all weather request. A perfect example of client and contractor working together for the best result.
- Remove existing course and cleared waste
- Cut and fill work and shaping of land to create the course undulations
- Install a 200mm deep dynamic base over the entire 900sqm
- Install natural stone edging for the 12 holes
- Install features such as an original mill stone, bridge, reclaimed steam engine parts such as wheels, chairs and brakes
A primary feature was the directional land sign, created from scratch by Che, which points to Paddington Station, Grand Central Station, Penzance Station (closest to Lands End) and Wick Station (closest to John O'Groats) – a superb replica of the famous sign at Lands End. In additon, Che hand produced an insert of the Lappa Valley Steam Railway logo, seen in the image below.
Che selected three Perfectly Green products to complete this superb golf course.
Proline putting surface - used for the putting greens on all 12 holes. Proline is a 16mm putting green turf with a stimp meter reading of 10. The best putting grass we've supplied!
Huracan landscaping grass - used for the all weather surround and other areas around the holes. Huracan is a brilliant, authentic and resilient 30mm pile height artificial grass
Leisure Colours - used throughout the course as a resilient walking surface, linking up holes. Leisure Colours is a 10mm, short and curly pile in a variety of colours, excellent for play areas, multi-use games areas and mini golf
What did they say?
Che said 'the products from Perfectly Green are exceptional. We've worked with Perfectly Green for many years now and always use their products whenever we can. This job has been a pleasure to work on and Keith has an inspirational vision of what a good tourist attraction should be. I'm really proud to have been selected to work with Lappa Valley Steam Railway on this project'.
Keith was equally impressed with Che and his works, saying 'Che went above and beyond for us. The land sign and the insert of our steam engine logo were a complete surprise. That is really great customer care and we're delighted with the end result'
Lappa Valley won the gold award for large attractions in Cornwall Tourism Awards. At the SW Awards they won the silver award for large attractions.
It's been great to have a part in this superb project!
